International Women’s Day: Debbie Terry’s Journey

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it’s the perfect opportunity to spotlight women who are making significant strides in their industries. Today, we’re thrilled to introduce you to Debbie Terry, our esteemed Property Portfolio Director based in York.

What Sparked Your Interest in the Property Sector?

My journey into the property sector began with a pragmatic consideration in my twenties – the pursuit of financial stability after getting married. Intrigued by the potential of property investment and mortgages, my partner and I took the bold step of renting out a room in their first house to foreign students during challenging times with mortgage rates soaring. This experience ignited my passion for property investment and development, leading to the acquisition of multiple properties, including my own home.

Advice for Aspiring Women in Property?

My advice for women aspiring to succeed in the property industry is straightforward yet empowering: follow your passion and have confidence in your aspirations. By staying true to your goals and believing in yourself, you can overcome any obstacle and achieve greatness.

Exciting Developments Shaping the Property Market

In my view, one of the most exciting trends shaping the property market is the shift towards developments that blend retail, office, and residential spaces. This innovative approach opens up a wealth of potential building projects, offering new opportunities for dynamic and multifaceted developments. My team and I were ahead of the curve, already engaging in mixed developments that aligned with this emerging trend.

Balancing Professional Responsibilities and Personal Aspirations

Achieving the right balance between professional responsibilities and personal commitments remains a constant pursuit for me. However, I consider myself fortunate to have worked for understanding bosses throughout my career who recognise the importance of flexibility and family. Despite the challenges, I find immense fulfilment in her job, often blurring the lines between work and leisure.

Female Leaders Who Inspire

I find inspiration in all strong women who have paved their paths with resilience and determination. Their stories serve as a reminder of the power of perseverance and the importance of supporting one another in our journeys.

Dream Dinner Party Guests

For a dream dinner party, my guest list is the comedian Jo Brand, along with Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders.

Favourite Uplifting Song by a Female Artist

When it comes to lifting my spirits, I turn to powerful ballads like Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” or upbeat tunes like the Nolans’ “I’m in the Mood for Dancing,” both of which evoke feelings of joy and nostalgia.

Favourite Pastime

In my spare time, I relish moments spent with friends and family, preferably during sunny holidays that offer the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

Childhood Ambitions

I can’t remember, although my mother sent me to a typing class when I was 14 years old. “You will never be out of a job if you can type, she said”. And, she was right!

Best Advice Received

The best piece of advice I have received from another woman is a heartfelt toast to strong women: “Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.”

BE THE WOMAN WHO…

…has your back.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let’s raise a toast to women like Debbie Terry, whose resilience, determination, and unwavering spirit inspire us all to reach for the stars.
