Meet the Team: Gary Ede – General Technician at Presence & Co.

In our latest “Meet the Team” series, we’re excited to introduce one of our longest-standing team members and an absolute staple here at Presence & Co., Gary Ede. With over 12 years with the company, Gary has seen it all, from challenging site builds to memorable projects across the UK. Known for his versatility and positive outlook, Gary is the kind of team member who brings out the best in those around him, all while sharing his wealth of experience.

Having been with Presence & Co. since the start, Gary has a unique perspective on how the company and the industry have changed, as well as on what keeps him motivated. Let’s take a look at Gary’s story.

How have you seen the company evolve over the years?

When I first joined, production was a bit slower, with traditional methods and fewer hands-on deck. But it’s been amazing to see how things have picked up pace. We’ve gained so much knowledge and improved methods, so moving from phase to phase on projects takes less time now. I’m always impressed by how our team has evolved, pushing forward with both speed and quality in mind.”

What keeps you motivated?

“For me, it’s the people. Working with great tradesmen, whether it’s for a single day or on a long-term project, makes all the difference. Over the years, I’ve learned so much from some fantastic team members who have always been there to lend a hand. That team spirit, that willingness to go above and beyond, is something I’ve really come to appreciate.”

Are there any projects that stand out to you?

“After 12 years, there are countless memorable projects, but a few highlights stand out. One was a stunning residential bungalow renovation and extension, and another was transforming North Lodge – a former security building at Salomons Estate into The Cottage, a charming, dog-friendly holiday let. Renovating Longford House, a beautiful office in the town centre, was also a proud moment, as were all the projects with our Northern team.

Building the soft play area at Bewl Water was especially interesting, as we had to reconstruct it entirely from memory and old photos after the tenants dismantled it! Then, there was the constant buzz of the Manchester Arndale project, which kept us all on our toes. And, of course, I can’t forget the MSG football finals – not exactly a project, but too special not to mention. Despite terrible weather beforehand, the skies cleared, and it turned out to be a fantastic staff day out.”

How has your role as a technician changed over the years?

The role has expanded a lot. It’s gone from straightforward tasks like dismantling and disposing of office furniture to something that’s much more about skill development and working as a cohesive team. Nowadays, it’s about challenging yourself to improve and also helping others do the same. Multi-skilling has become key – it’s where the industry is going, and it’s great to see our team evolving with it.”

What’s a typical day like for you?

“No two days are alike! I could be doing anything from reactive maintenance jobs, PAT testing, fire alarm checks, working locally, or travelling further afield. Interacting with clients, tenants, office managers, and my team keeps it interesting. I’m a quiet guy – I observe and learn – but I love making a positive impression on people. I like to think I’ve helped a few people along the way, and I’m looking forward to meeting many more.”

Fun Fact: Can you share a funny or memorable moment?

“One of the best memories has to be the time I got stuck in a lift for nearly an hour. After what felt like an eternity, someone finally heard me and let me out – and had a good laugh about it! Luckily, I’m not claustrophobic, and I ended up laughing along with them. You have to see the funny side, right?”

With his years of experience, steady presence, and willingness to adapt and learn, Gary is the heart of Presence & Co. – and we’re incredibly grateful to have him on board. His positive outlook and technical knowledge have made a lasting impact on both the team and the projects he’s worked on, and it’s no wonder he’s such a cherished member of our community.

Next week, stay tuned as we introduce you to even more of our team members. We’ll be meeting our seasoned technicians, diving into their unique stories and the skills they bring to each project.
