Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve introduced you to some of the talented people who keep Presence & Co. running smoothly. First, there was Rob Laming, our Maintenance Supervisor in the South, who keeps everything from quotes to quality standards under control. Then, we met Aaron Hine, an experienced electrician who not only brings his expertise to every project but also is a mentor to those learning and at the start of their career, like Monty.
This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Monty McDonald himself, an apprentice electrician with great enthusiasm, an eye for quality, and a clear ambition to reach the top of his trade. Monty joined us with a genuine passion for electrical work, and his approach to each task speaks volumes about his commitment to learning and growing. Paired with his can-do attitude, he’s quickly established himself as a valued member of the Presence & Co. team. His drive, attention to detail, and openness to feedback make him stand out – and it’s safe to say Monty’s got a bright future ahead!
We sat down at Monty’s to speak about his journey so far.
What made you interested in becoming an electrician?
“I started in the construction industry, working on various sites and seeing all kinds of trades in action. Electrical work always caught my eye – it looked like the most challenging, but also the most rewarding. I was drawn to it because it really requires problem-solving and precision, which I love.”
What’s been the most valuable lesson you’ve learned so far?
“One thing I’ve come to appreciate is the importance of taking pride in your work. There’s nothing better than finishing a job to a high standard and knowing it’s done right. It’s rewarding to step back, see what you’ve accomplished, and be able to show it off.”
Which part of your training are you most excited about?
“Definitely the testing and inspection side of things. I’ve heard it’s one of the most challenging areas for electricians, and I can’t wait to learn more about it. There’s so much precision involved, and getting it right feels like a real achievement.”
How has working with the Presence & Co. team impacted your growth?
“The electricians here are brilliant – they’re always willing to lend a hand, answer questions, or show me something new. Working with Aaron has been a real highlight for me; he’s got great experience, and he’s incredibly patient. He’s quick to tell me when I’m on the right track and just as quick to correct me if I’m off – which is exactly what you need when you’re learning. Aaron’s mentorship has given me a lot of confidence in my own abilities.”
What’s been the biggest challenge in your apprenticeship so far?
“Learning to work within tight schedules has been a challenge, especially when there’s a lot to get done in a limited amount of time. I’ve learned that it’s crucial not to rush, though. Even when you’re on a deadline, double-checking your work is key to making sure it’s safe and high quality.”
What’s your ultimate goal in your career as an electrician?
“Right now, I’m focused on passing my AM2s and becoming a fully qualified electrician. It’s a huge milestone, and I can’t wait to reach it. I’m putting in the time and effort to get there as soon as I can, and with the support I have here, I feel like I’m on track.”
Monty’s dedication and genuine eagerness to learn make him a standout individual. From the way he approaches challenges to his attention to detail, Monty shows what we value at Presence & Co.: a dedication to quality, an open mind, and the drive to keep improving. We’re excited to see where Monty’s career will take him and proud to be a part of his journey.
Next week, we’ll introduce you to Gary, our longest-standing team member and a jack-of-all-trades. As a General Maintenance Technician, Gary has been with Presence & Co. since the beginning, bringing his expertise to every project and keeping the team in high spirits. Stay tuned, as you won’t want to miss his story!
